SAP RECRUITING STILL SLOW

SAP logoSometimes, there’s no news like no news and SAP hasn’t been making much noise with Business By Design since its channel conference in Savannah, Ga., in late February.

ByD, of course, is the online system that is supposed to be one of the keys to SAP’s future in financial software. But the pace at which the company’s channel is growing doesn’t show much promise for having this product take off anytime soon. The partner finder on the SAP website shows 83 locations in the United States, that’s locations not organizations.
That probably translates into 65 to 70 separate VARs if resellers with multiple locations are accounted for. These include the three Sikich and three Itelligence locations, for example. Now a previous issue of the newsletter quoted Kevin Gilroy, who is running the North American channel program, about how onboarding had turned into a bottleneck for channel recruitment. Looking at the names on the reseller list, I don’t see many that weren’t displayed at the Savannah confab. By comparison, there are 128 locations listed for Business One, which my memory tells me hasn’t grown that much over the last few years. The news company out of SAP also seems to be concentrated on the high end, which is interesting for a company that says its future lies in indirect distribution. Most of the action remains at the enterprise, after all that’s where the big money is. It remains to be seen how SAP can manage to shift that revenue bulge to coming from the channel. This is still very early in the process if this change in models is going to occur.
