BLACKBAUD TESTS ANALYSIS APP

Andrew Payne BlackbaudBlackbaud is testing an application that can be used to provide financial analysis by nonprofit organizations. The Charleston, S.C.-based nonprofit vendor has an early adopter program under way for the offering that would be sold as an add-on to applications such as the Financial Edge.
The company has not determined pricing. Since for-profit vendors have marketed—and not had a great amount of success with standalone financial analysis software—it will be interesting to see the reception. However, Blackbaud sees the product’s primary use as being in the board room, which seems to give it a better chance of success than the analysis software that was more aimed at the accountants. Analysis means the usual array of ratios, but there are also those that are unique to nonprofits, such as program efficiency ratio, which is the percentage of program service expense compared to total expense "Along with the ratios and the results, we will be providing text that offers some context and some graphics," says Andrew Payne, product line manager for company's financial applications. Since presenting problems without solutions to a board might not be career enhancing, the analysis will also provide some suggested actions. Data for benchmarking comparisons with peers is being supplied through a third party and would not only enable organizations to compare themselves to companies that are usually considered peers, but to those who might not be obviously similar.
