SAP SPENDS BIG ON DATABASES

SAP logoSAP is putting millions into promoting its Hana in-memory database platform and in seeding startups to develop for that technology. The company intends to establish a $155 million venture fund for ISVs and to pump another $337 million incentive for customers to move to Hana.

This is a largely a big data story, but Hana is making its way down market and the in-memory technology appears to be the direction the market is taking for all vendors. The part of the initiative that was announced this week that is most relevant to the midmarket is plans for Sybase Anywhere. It becomes the front-end database for Hana so that platform can extend to mobile and embedded applications in real time. The other items in the announcement include the general availability of NetWeaver Business Warehouse and Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise. The first is a component power by Hana; the second a database option for SAP Business Suite applications.
