SAGE'S GENERAL MANAGER RANKS THIN

Krista Endsley, SageVisiting the leadership section of the website of Sage North America is a daily requirement. Someone might come or go if you don't check regularly. But it suddenly seemed obvious that the place that has been hit by changes is the general manager section. If you have not visited the Sage leadership page, it has two sections - the executive team and the general managers. Despite the hiring of a new CFO, the executive section has been stable for a few months.
But the list of GMs is thinning. Three of the six GMs shown on the page are gone or going. Gone is Sam Hunter, who was GM of the value product unit. Gone or going is Krista Endsley, GM of nonprofit solutions, and Dan Wilzoch, GM for Sage CRM Solutions. Sage this week announced it had completed the sale of the nonprofit products and Act and SalesLogix. Since Endsley and Wilzoch are going to the buyers, their pictures should be coming off the page soon. That leaves Jon Witty, GM of construction and real estate; Johnny Laurent, VP of employer solutions; and Nancy Harris, GM of Sage 50, Canadian edition. Witty has been quoted as saying is unlikely to sell his product lines. But this thinning starts raising the question about whether the GMs are needed, at least in this particularly structure which seems suddenly very fragile. Couldn't some of these jobs be done with by a senior product manager reporting to the executive team or to a reduced number of GMs? Witty's products are specialized accounting packages so do they need a separate GM? You have to think CEO Pascal Houillon is looking at this structure to see if it still makes sense after thinning out the product lines.
