MANAGING DATA TOPS AICPA LIST

AICPAManaging and Retaining Data emerged as the top issue 2013 Top Technology Initiatives Survey from the American Institute of CPAs. The No. 2 issue is Securing the IT environment. You may remember that this was once the Top 10 technologies and used to be issued before the second quarter of the year. But that was before it got mired in technology language goo and the Institute’s need to tinker with the format every year. I’ll repeat what I’ve said before which is that when it was the Top Ten technologies, it had a lot of headline appeal.
But the phrase technology initiatives survey is from the same school of fuzzy language as thought leadership and seamless integration. Well, it’s a little better than that. This year’s survey was electronically and conducted separately in the United States and Canada and had 1,670 complete responses. The U.S. survey responders had the following composition: 36 percent public accounting, 36 percent business and industry, and 28 percent consulting, government or not-for profit folks. The rest of the issues are as follows: No. 3, Managing IT Risks and Compliance; No. 4, Ensuring Privacy; No. 5, Managing System Implementation; No. 6, Preventing and Responding to Computer Fraud; No. 7, Enabling Decision Support and Analytics; No.8, Governing and Managing IT Investment and Spending; No. 9, Leveraging Emerging Technologies; No. 10, Managing Vendors and Service Providers. And in the old days, the AICPA acted like this was important—letting the press know when it would be coming. Now it’s like the baby dropped on the hospital door step in the middle of the night.
