DYNAMICS CRM GOES INTO OFFICE ORBIT

MicrosoftMicrosoft is readying the launch of the next generation of Dynamics CRM, code-named Orion. But probably more important to resellers from a business point of view is the company’s move to discontinue Dynamics CRM Online on the platform of Microsoft Business Solutions, the company unit responsible for the four Dynamics accounting packages. Orion gives CRM a refreshed interface and Microsoft has set up a partner launch portal.

But the platform move sets up the possibility of Dynamics CRM being moved totally out of MBS. One industry observer said, “Yes, that’s the next step.” As reported two weeks ago on the Microsoft website in the blog of Kevin Machayya, “The Microsoft online services environment uses the same billing and administration platform as Office 365 and will provide a unified experience, simplified account management, and enhanced privacy and data security.” The change kicks in during Microsoft’s September quarter. The possibility of separating CRM from ERP raises some interesting thoughts since CRM has been the fastest-growing revenue segment in the Dynamics line. Channel members have muttered for years that Microsoft isn’t committed to ERP, although since the Microsoft purchase of Great Plains was just over 12 years ago, it has shown some commitment. But with on-premise accounting software a low-growth commodity and Microsoft’s move to the ERP also low-growth, the intriguing thought is Microsoft could stay in CRM, but ditch the financial software, or at least MBS itself is an endangered species and the whole thing gets absorbed into Office.
