AX FUTURE IN MANAGED SERVICES Featured

Pepijn Richter, Microsoft Microsoft has not used this phrase. But a number of the features coming with this year’s release of Dynamics AX running on the Azure platform (Dynamics AX 2012 R3) have the look of offerings from a Managed Service Provider. Microsoft is offering disaster recovery and automatic updates. The updates, according to Pepijn Richter, director of ERP product marketing, resemble the automatic updates from Office installations [Note: HP tech support told me to disable auto Windows updates because they screw up computers. They certainly did with mine].

With disaster recovery, “We are doing a real-time back up of the database,” Richter said. And  instead of looking for a local facility,  “They can have a Microsoft data center,” he said. Disaster recovery will be available before July. Microsoft is also providing Life Cycle Services which Richter said helps organization adopt technology faster. Services will track installed applications and match them against benchmarked practices of other companies. The system will alert customers about recommended actions and end users will be able to logon to the cloud-based service to manage the product. Also coming to AX is a development tool called Siena, which is available as a beta for download from the Microsoft marketplace  “It’s a technology that helps people develop apps within doing coding,” Richter said. “You can develop apps by dragging and dropping.”
