THE LOST ART OF PROMOTING CONFERENCES?

Obviously this item doesn't apply to Microsoft, which has given the Web a huge dose of Convergence that's hard to miss. But there are two shows going on this week, right now, and if you went to one vendor's Web site, you could miss it.  Exact Engage, a user conference, ended yesterday.
But unless you know to visit www.exactengage.com, it's virtually impossible to find out about the show by visiting the parent company site, www.exact.com, or the Western Hemisphere version. www.exactamericas.com. Are we to assume that nothing of value occurred that would be of interest to those who didn't attend? There were product press releases aplenty before the show, but nothing about it afterward, and those prior releases buried mentions of Engage. NetSuite, which is not shy about promoting itself, did pump up its show ahead of time. But given the buildup to its Hairball awards that are being presented sometime by the end of the week. I would have thought there would have been news about the conference more recent than April 7. Sage has always been in need of good promotion of its Insights conference. One reseller asked at a presentation in New York how Sage could show ROI for attendance. The answer came in the remarks of Rob Johnson, senior director of partner relations for Sage North America. As noted in another item, he said a banker would be coming to talk about operating issues for VARs and Sage will increase its offering of this kind of advice. This is exactly what VARs need and it also spreads the message that the vendor wants to do something for its channel, other than urge them on to sell more.
