BIG MAC ATTACK IN PRESS AND ANALYST CORPS

MacBook ProThis is not about editors at a trade show buffet, which is something like an attack by locusts. It's about the Macintosh computer and its spread among press and analysts and even some resellers. The trend is hardly major at this point. Yet, Macs have been showing up in greater numbers, at least that's what I think I saw at Microsoft Convergence and Sage Insights. It doesn't take much to represent greater numbers because there were hardly any before.
I purchased one after having realized that I needed a backup laptop for trips and turned to the Mac on the advice of Wayne Schulz, who is something of a one-man social media network. A lot of us believe anything good enough for Schulz is worth trying. And in a press and analyst briefing at Insights with both of us present, I looked around the tables and realized that five or six of the seven laptops in use (I couldn't quite see one and the owner left before I could), were Macs. I've used Macs before as an editor so this is not a new experience. On the whole, its pluses and minuses come out greatly to the plus size. I'm fairly confident I'm going to spend a lot less time with tech support, a factor that doesn't get enough play in the cost of ownership discussion. The ability to scroll by dragging two fingers over the computer pad, its speed on startup and power down, along with a generally cleaner look are to the plus. It has a decidedly clunkier approach to spell checking than the PCs and in the cases of sizing documents, there are times its flexibility takes more time than simply choosing "Arrange All" for arranging document windows on the PC.
