SAGE NAMES NEW CEO

Guy BerruyerA Frenchman, Guy Berruyer, will take over the job of Chief Executive of the Sage Group after Paul Walker steps down after 16 years in the job. Berruyer, CEO of Sage’s Mainland Europe and Asia business, has worked for Intuit and Bull, the French software group and spent 13 years with the company and will take over with the start of the new fiscal year on October 1. And he’s not an accountant.

It was interesting that one analyst quoted a Financial Times article that speculated on the change said, “There was some concern that Sage was a company run by accountants for accountants, and was missing the pizzazz of the software sector.” I remember telling a friend “What do you expect from a company run by accountants?” when he complained about the company’s direction. Walker is a chartered accountant, as is CFO Paul Harrison and Paul Stobart, managing director of Sage’s United Kingdom and Ireland operations. That was three out of six executive directors on the board. It would be quite a change to hear someone run the financial results meetings who does not use phases that start with “whilst” as Walker does. Personally, I think a non-accountant would be likely to bring a new approach, something the company needs.
