LET'S GANG UP ON DELTEK WEEK

Maybe someone sees something in the market. Or maybe it's a coincidence that announcements this week by Intacct and NetSuite, two SaaS vendors, both targeting the Deltek user base. As noted elsewhere in this newsletter, Intacct launched Intacct Project Accounting to go after the professional services organizations that are one of the cores of Deltek's installed base.

NetSuite, in its usual gloves-off approach, said it would move into one of Deltek's other major user groups, government contractors. NetSuite CEO Zach Nelson brought up the subject during yesterday's second-quarter earnings Webcast when asked about the government business. "We think it will be a strong market for us," he said. Then Nelson added in his usual charitable tone towards competitors, "We think Deltek is ripe for market share erosion. It's a very old system." Well, that was better than his label for Great Plains (Dynamics GP), which he told analysts was ancient and he got around to terming on-premise software "Stone Age software", one of the most-used labels out of NetSuite. Deltek's view is that has the tools to continue to lead in this market. "Despite the intentions of other vendors to be GovCon players, we continue to win business with the largest and most innovative government contractors," said a spokesperson. "Deltek continues to be the industry-standard solution in this space because our solutions were built from the ground up to meet the needs of government contractors."
