SAP PUSHES BUSINESS ANALYTICS

SAP is making a huge push on business analytics. But when it comes to whether the mid-market financial software VARs it is recruiting for Business By Design are a target, my first question was “Why?” The same response came from the VARs who are coming into this channel. More than one new VAR said that BYD has business analytics built-in and that the main BI line, BusinessObjects, makes little sense for the typical Sage or Microsoft reseller. It is more suited for the traditional SAP channel.

An interview with a Business Objects implementer showed that company felt that a client with an IT budget of $200,000 was on the low end and would be stressed to afford the low end of the product line. A market-share graph that was displayed at a keynote showed the competitors as IBM and Oracle. This is one area where SAP delivered a mixed message. SVP Kevin Gilroy said that SAP is overweighting its marketing spend on analytics and indicated the ERP resellers are a target. But another SAPer said BYD dealers aren’t being recruited for Business Objects. About the third time I asked the question, it was posed to Robert Courteau, president of SAP North America. “Will SAP take Crystal Reports up market, extend Business Objects with prepackaging or cheaper versions, or come out with some new versions?” Courteau replied, “All of the above.” There's also the question of whether BI specialists do a better job than ERP VARs who take on BI.  However, this argument resembles the earlier days of CRM when the same question was asked concerning whether the application could be better handled by a CRM specialist or accounting software VAR learning the new line.
