VERSATA FOLLOWS THE M&A TRAIL

Versata logoThe more I learn about Versata, the company that acquired ERP vendor Everest Software in August, the more it reminds me of Infor, although Versata is nowhere Infor's size. Both have built themselves through of purchases of specialized companies, although unlike Infor, Versata's subsidiaries continue to operate under their prior names with their own Web pages.

Versata is also more IT oriented, while Infor has more financial products. Versata has had a steady stream of acquisitions since 2006 when it bought the former Artemis International, now Versata Software. In 2007, it purchased privately held Nextance, which markets enterprise contract management software at an undisclosed price and next closed its deal to buy Gensym rule engine software and services for mission-critical applications that support and automate decisions.  Early in 2008, it acquired Nuvo Network Management which had been traded on the Toronto exchange, for $17.65 million. Other companies it purchased since then include TenFold Corp., Clear Technology and Ecora software. How big is Versata? The question involves several companies that are owned by Versata Enterprises. A combination of results from the former public companies and some widely ranging estimates on revenue and staff size indicates that the units generally range from $5 million to about $18 million, what looks like a disciplined acquisition strategy.  I come up with more than $100 million in revenue, not including a couple of units that have proved difficult to make any kind of guess.
