ERP MESSES A GOOD MARKET IN 2012?

/panorama logoThe Panorama Consulting Group has issued its top ten predictions for the ERP market for next year.  The most interesting thing is what two of them may mean in terms of opportunity. These are No. 3, acceleration of ERP failures and No. 5, fewer do-it-yourself ERP products. There’s a direct relationship between these since it’s the D-I-Y jobs that lead to failures. It’s sort of like the TV sitcom when the main character tries to fix the plumbing to save money and ends up spending a bundle to rebuild the bathroom.

Panorama’s report said that, “Companies have simply under-invested time, money, expertise, and resources in their ERP projects in recent years, so we will see those bad decisions catch up to us in the coming year.” So there should be opportunity for expert consultants to get new business and to bail out some of the victims. In between was the scariest of the ten items, No. 4, Increase in the number of ERP lawsuits. Panorama is often consulted as an expert witness in litigation by both courts and lawyers and reports seeing an uptick in this business. Some of the D-I-Y people will be looking for someone to blame. Among the other seven selections are No. 1, continuing consolidation, and No. 2, Shake-up in the mid-market ERP space. The firm cited Infor, IFS, Epicor, Kinaxis and QAD as continuing aggressive growth in the ERP space. Pick No. 6 says SaaS vendors will continue picking off part of the market, but they will start making broader inroads in 2012. Panorama pointed to the following as gaining on the traditional ERP vendors: Salesforce, Plex Systems, NetSuite, Kinaxis, and Workday. Convergence of CRM and social media was the no. 7 prediction. Misalignment of ERP systems mentioned in No. 8, stems from businesses failing to invest adequately in ERP software. No. 9, Conducting a business blueprint as part of the ERP selection process was related to the problems mentioned in No. 3 and No. 4. Finally, No. 10 predicts  technology-centric system integrators will continue to struggle to be effective. Those bodies need to worry more about business process design, organizational change management, and effective project management.
