APPLE IN THE ACCOUNTING OFFICE

Gary Boomer, Boomer ConsultingThis does not pertain directly to the mid-market reselling business. But since so many VARs have CPAs on staff or run CPA programs, the penetration of Apple products into traditional tax and accounting firms should be of interest.

Five years ago, well-known consultant Gary Boomer probably would not be telling attendees some as those at the recent AICPA Tech+ conference that Apple’s move into accounting offices cannot be stopped. And he certainly would not have related that he wanted his firm, Boomer Consulting, to go all Apple and forsake the PC/Windows world. His colleague and son. Jim Boomer, opposed that move so the firm is now heavily, but not all Apple. “If it had been up to me we would have gone all Mac and not look back,” said Boomer pères, perhaps intending the rhyme. Boomer fils thinks there are still too many things that won’t run or run well on the Mac platform. There were about 125 attendees in the Boomer session and that also would have been considered a remarkable occurrence not to long ago. At the same confab, when Dana “Rick” Richardson gave his usual prediction about the future of technology, he asked his audience how many had iPads. Probably half of the audience of around 400 members raised their hands. Gary Boomer noted the spread of the iPad in the airline industry. United is rolling out 11,000 iPads for cockpits, following in the steps of Delta and American.
