MAGIC JOHNSON: $60K FROM SAGE? Featured

Earvin Sage tried to load the show floor with attendees at Summit in Las Vegas in July by piling big-name speakers on the keynote stage. Someone who has priced speakers says Magic Johnson’s fee is $60,000 “and you have to buy fuel for his jet.” Add in Karl Rove and Jessica Alba and lesser-known figures, Robert Gibbs and Biz Stone and the bill for bringing in some national press and the rest of the cost of conferences in Vegas and you get some big bucks.

And many of us believe Sage paid for this by chintzing on normal things, like food for receptions on the exhibit hall floor, by not publishing a conference guide or press kits and by holding the executive Q&A on the show, separated from the noise by a thin, thin layer of fabric. It also resulted in content I like to call “empty calories”. It seemed the company was marking time, or to factor in some realpolitik, knowing a new CEO was being named soon, who would want to spend money on direction? The show website has advice for what to do after its conclusion with "Continue the Conversation".  I suppose attendees will just have to be content with their memories of Karl and Jessica.
