RANDOM THOUGHTS: THE OLYMPICS

Olympic logo

Watching the Olympics, I yearn for the old days in competition with the Soviet bloc athletics, back when men were men and so were women. For the next competition in Rio, there will be a new demonstration sport, rhythmic synchronized bowling in which competitors are judged on style and how they balance their beer cans.

A lot of men have trouble considering sports that have to clear scores, such as gymnastics, to be a sport. I think that's because it's to sit around with the guys with a six-pack and cheer for a double-twist layout from the balance beam. I imagine them yelling "Go for the two-point conversion.".... In a sequel to the new Disney Movie, "The Odd Life of Timothy Green", Timothy is seriously injured following a devastating infestation of Japanese beetles. However, his parents bring him back to health following an emergency visit to "Lowes" for some insecticide. ... Was watching the advertisements for the second season of the TV series, "Grimm" in which the protagonist looks at regular people who suddenly appear evil and sinister. Reminded me of some of our family reunions. ... I don't know why the lady next to me at the opera got so upset. She asked how long the performance would be and I replied, "I don't know. But it's not over until you sing." ... I'm not surprised that 1 million GE dishwashers have been recalled because of fire hazard. Users should have been suspicious that the appliances had an Incinerate setting. ... After country singer Randy Travis was found drunk and lying naked in a Texas road, there was a frenzied rush by songwriters to be the first to complete the sure-hit "Naked and Drunk", but then they all realized it had been done several times before. Travis defended his actions as being part of an artistic experience of the suffering of the country music world.... Reading the news about a looming lockout in the National Hockey League, I wondered what life would be like if the NHL, NBA and NFL all had a lock out in the same season. I guess it would be similar to the new movie "Revolution" in which all electrical energy has vanished, only a lot worse.
