LYNN PICKS TALLAN FOR M&A VEHICLE

Jeff Lynn, the former Tectura COO who is out to help the VAR market consolidate, has picked Tallan, a Rocky Hill, Conn.-based infrastructure dealer as his vehicle for merger and acquisition. Lynn has a company called Dynamics Ventures, but that is primarily for securing funding and won't likely be the go-to-market unit, he said at this week's Convergence conference. Lynn noted Microsoft is encouraging smaller VARs to aggregate and he intends to help in that effort. Tallan, headed by CEO Craig Branning, has 87 employees of whom 63 are field consultants.
The company provides consulting services utilizing tools such as BizTalk and SharePoint. The organization had $16 million in annual revenue. Lynn is in the early stages of creating an organization that encompasses infrastructure VARs and those selling Dynamics products. However, he envisions the business will be about a lot more than simply selling software and will include services in its business line. Tallan was founded 25 years ago as Business Data Services. It took on the name Tallan, which it says is derived from a Greek word meaning “talent”, in 2001. Its Web site highlights some accomplishments, including building a data warehouse for an upscale fashion catalog, implementing an API project at an online auction house and integrating an in-store POS system for an electronics retailer. The statement that it saved the latter $300 million gives an indication of the scope of its projects.
