RANDOM THOUGHTS: DEATH AND TAXES

Death and taxes seemed certain until GE came along. They are working on death. … Speaking of both, on the way to my Indiana home from the Cincinnati airport, I passed through Lawrenceburg and neighboring Aurora, Ind., where I saw a building in which a Liberty Tax store was flanked by a bank and urgent care facility. A case of great planning.

However, down the road about a mile, I didn’t notice if a small building housing a company that offers both tax preparation and tombstones was still in business. But, not far west on U.S. 50 in Aurora were two trees with about 20 turkey vultures roosting and a couple of miles west of that is the Aurora Casket Co. And even that’s not as well thought out as further west in Dillsboro where a clinic sits across the highway from a nursing home and next to a cemetery. Obviously, end-to-end supply chain management. ... If anyone thinks I’m on a morbid theme, it’s probably because our chorus is working on a concert version of Puccini’s “Turandot” in which suitors for a lovely Chinese princess must answer three questions. If they don’t answer them all correctly, they lose their heads. Actually, this example of  "Survivor Peking" stemmed from a grammatical error. A scribe misunderstood Turandot when he overheard her talking to a servant and wrote down that she “wanted to get some heads". The prince, of course, answers the questions and wins Turandot's hand (and presumably the rest of her as well). Then they appeared on "The Newly Wed Game." "Turnandot, how many suitors will your husband say you had executed?  He says, 'seven'. 'You know it was nine; you just never remember anything important.'" ... Gas prices are really getting out of hand. I went to fuel up at one station and the choices were “Pay in advance”, “debit/credit” or “pint of blood."
