I always thought that Microsoft decided that Nadella, then an up and comer, had a brighter future than MBS, although at the time the company did think that the unit had a higher-growth potential than it turned out to have. After it turned out the Dynamics business was not going to hit $10 billion, Microsoft never seemed to be as interested. With Microsoft having moved Dynamics CRM billing, etc., to the Office division it seems likely CRM could be separated from the ERP side. The Dynamics software business remains a rounding error and given the corporate bloat at Microsoft it seems unlikely there will ever be a nimble organization no matter how much talent it has. I would also add in the complaint I've heard that Microsoft has never done much to develop GP. The Unit4 report triggered the thought that private equity ownership could solve these problems. Microsoft, the products, the channels, everybody involving with the financial applications would be better off if Dynamics ERP was owned by a private equity group willing to make investments and able to move more quickly.
