Currently, Nadella is EVP of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise group where he made $7.7 million for the last reported year. He was previously president of the company's server and tools business. The previous favorite had been Nokia executive Steve Elop, who came back to the company courtesy of its purchase of the Nokia mobile phone group. Elop was president of the former Microsoft Business Division. But maybe Microsoft remembers how much it had to pay out for repurchasing Elop's house in the fall of 2010 at well above market value. His original employment contract, done before the housing market crashed, required Microsoft to buy the house at the difference between the market value and the appraised price. Last year, Microsoft agreed to cover $25 million of Elop's reported payout from Nokia as part of the deal.
