VIEWING REAL "DRILL DOWN" IN IOT Featured

Steve Edginton, Epicor, with Photon sensorThe Internet of Things has gotten hot, judging from the number of demonstrations and sessions at recent conferences, including Epicor's Insights and SAP's Sapphire. At the latter conference, a demonstration was made using a power drill to make a hole in a piece of concrete.

The drill communicated back to the accounting package, which entered a price for the job ($18, I think) and can then kick out an invoice. I suppose generally things won't be that thinly sliced but it was an example of just how fine distinctions can be made. At its conference, Epicor also gave IoT a highly visible spot in keynotes. Steve Edginton, senior director of development, demonstrated use of Photon sensors that can be place with machines to communicate with the financial sensors. In this case, the sensor worked with an undifferentiated machine to communicate fuel level. "When the fuel goes below a certain level, the light will goes from green to red," he said. The sensor sent a message to the cloud and a request for a fuel delivery, including a purchase order and all necessary paper work are pushed out to the contracted supplier. IoT has already made an impact at enterprise companies, but is poised to work its way into manufacturers below that level. At an IoT breakout session, about 50 attendees were asked how many were using IoT in their businesses, only a few hands went up. Asked how many expected they would be utilizing the technology within two years, virtually every hand went up.
