MICROSOFT OPENS CLOUD DOOR? Featured

Jon Roskill, AcumaticaMy thinking was that after Microsoft moved its Dynamics products to the cloud the behemoth would roll over competitors. That may have been a bit premature. Some admittedly brief conversations with resellers yielded a picture that Dynamics 365 Enterprise Edition is doing really well while Dynamics 365 Business Edition, not so well.

I once joked that Microsoft's slogan was "The product goes out before the quality goes in" and comments from one VAR essentially said the same thing. Moreover, he continued that the Business Edition was "Little better than QuickBooks".  As to the door being open, Acumatica CEO Jon Roskill notes,  "I would say whenever there is a platform transition the door is open for a change of the guard." He noted that is what has provided opportunity for companies such as Acumatica. However, I expected that once Microsoft entered with a definitive cloud product, the door would slam shut. Instead, there seems to be a great deal of confusion about what Microsoft is doing with its financial applications or simply a lack of information. Recently, an analyst who is usually well connected asked me what Microsoft was doing. I had asked one high-quality reseller a month ago if I was the only who felt that he couldn't figure out where information was coming from  the software company. He assured me I wasn't. With Sage still trying to pedal fast enough to catch up with move to the cloud and SAP trying to get back in the game with its cloud-based ByD, Microsoft may have opened up an opportunity for someone, although these chances tend to disappear quickly.
