INTUIT OPENS QUICKBOOKS APIs

Brad Smith, IntuitSaying it is looking for the next killer financial application, Intuit has opened the application programming interface to several products. These are Quicken, QuickBooks, Mint.com and FinanceWorks.

In its official statement, the company said its "data aggregation and categorization capabilities are the heart and soul of its financial data service." CEO Brad Smith pointed to the humble origins of Quicken, invented at a kitchen table, and Mint.com, whose founder, Aaron Patzer, was too busy to manage his own money (and was dissatisfied with products on the market, like Quicken), as evidence that ISVs can produce products Intuit has not thought of. The open APIs will be available on a limited basis through the Intuit Partner Platform in October with wider availability in December. Intuit said it will pick the vendors that can utilize the financial data service in order to maintain standards. The company said some resulting third-party products are likely to be incorporated into its own line.
