MICROSOFT SPELLS OUT CHANNEL DOWNSIZING

Jeff EdwardsHow far Microsoft plans to go in shrinking its channel got definition this week from Jeff Edwards, director of partner strategy. During an interview at this week’s Convergence user conference in Atlanta, Edwards said there are about 950 United States partners and the company “needs 300 to 400.” Microsoft has spent the last year signaling it wants to drive business to larger VARs, the midsize ones to grow and the smaller ones to combine. SURPRISE ISSUE

This issue wasn’t supposed to exist because my family and I were supposed to leave for Amsterdam on April 15 and be in Paris today. But, well … you know. We’ve gotten a full refund on airfare and are filing claims for cancellation insurance and hope to use that money again. So the missing issue, one of the four not published annually, will be missing another Friday, probably in June, so we can spend that money to get to Europe. Next week should be full of informaton as I will be attending Convergence in Atlanta. However, I'm paying attention to any reports of active volcanos in Georgia.

NETSUITE HAIRBALLS ON PARADE? NOT!

NetSuite LogoThere’s a profound sense of disappointment that after a promising press release issued on March 25, NetSuite has yet to publish the names of the winners of its first-annual Hairball Awards. Thirty companies were nominated for the honor, named for their ability to untangle the hairball of code in corporations, and the winners were to be announced at last week’s SuiteCloud conference in California. DYNAMICS REVENUE TURNS AROUND

Revenue from Dynamics products rose for the first time since the September 2008 quarter as Microsoft reported results for the third quarter ended March 31. Dynamics revenue was up 3 percent over last year’s corresponding period and that contribution left sales for the nine months down 1 percent. The company does not provide actual dollar amounts for its Dynamics results. The results are buried inside of Microsoft Business Division, whose revenue was $4.24 billion in the most recently ended quarter, was down from $4.5 billion a year earlier. Read more...

WALKER LEAVING SAGE

There shouldn’t be too many people in the Sage world who don’t know that Sage Group announced earlier this week that Paul Walker will be leaving after 26 years with the company and 16 years as chief executive. That would seem to signal a change in direction. What change? I don’t think any of us know the secrets of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, home of the mother ship for Sage North America. His departure, which seems contingent on finding a replacement, came after last week’s speculation by CitiGroup analysts that the healthcare group is ripe for being sold off. I continue to read their remarks as applying to healthcare, not the whole company. Read more...

ADVENTURES IN PC-LAND

My HP notebook developed a serious flicker and some nice color bars, along with a spreading discoloration. It looks like it got hit, except that all I remember doing is turning it slightly on the Amtrak train seat tray to use it. After digging out the support telephone number for HP support, I recited the product serial number, my home address, family history and elementary school grade average to verify my identify to be told it was a mother board problem and the warranty and/or support contract expired six days ago. “But we didn’t get the computer until June. How could it have expired?” Read more...

EXACT NEW HQ A SIGN OF OPTIMISM?

Exact logoMaybe I’m reading too much into this. But I’d like to think when a company moves into a new headquarters facility that it is expressing confidence in its future. Anyway, Exact has moved into a new HQ building after 25 years in the same spot in Delft, the Netherlands, into the Technopolis Innovation Park in the same city. The press release didn’t describe the size of the building, but said that for the 500 employees in Delft the new facility offers “a flexible, open work environment, in terms of both time and space.” Read more...

MICROSOFT ROLLS OUT GP 2010, SURPRISE

It would have been hard not to miss the build up and there was only a bit of letdown when the press release issued under NDA before it was made public turned out to be for Dynamics GP 2010. Considering the number of launch events resellers have scheduled for the new version, there weren’t too many people that didn’t know this product was hitting the market soon—general release is May 1. Errol Schoenfish, director of product management, said there are three themes with GP 2010. Read more...
