QLIK CHANNEL REVS GROW

The channel for analytics specialist Qlik Technology chipped in 65 percent of license and first-year maintenance revenue for the first quarter ended March 31. The company said during this week's earnings webcast that was up from 57 percent of the same segments a year ago. This is more from systems integrators than resellers, judging from the comments, and the total was affected by a multimillion dollar sale. Overall, Qlik reported a net loss of $30.3 million for the most recently ended period, compared to red ink of $25.9 million in last year's corresponding quarter.

Avalara has named Mehrdad Talaifar as VP of its EMEA operations. Talaifar, based in London, England, is another link in the sales and use tax company's plans for global expansion. Well, they have to spend that $100-million investment somewhere, don't they? Talaifar has strong credentials in the indirect tax area. He was principal of global tax technology services for Ryan from August 2013 until last month. Before that, he was senior director of strategic relations for EMEA for Thomson Reuters from January 2011 through August 2013.

Just what the world needs: another entry into the small business accounting competition. Okay, I'm sure the folks at One Up are fine; it's just there are so many entries in this market someone should publish a field guide. "Ah yes, the yellow-throated accounting package. You can distinguish it..." This one claims to provide-hands free accounting that requires no data entry. The suite includes automatic inventory, CRM and invoicing. The company bills the product as one that is aimed totally at mobile users.
NETSUITE BUYING BRONTO SOFTWARE

NetSuite plans to acquire privately held Bronto Software, a cloud-based commerce marketing company for about $200 million in cash and stock. NetSuite signed an agreement with Durham, N.C.-based Bronto in a deal expected to close during the June quarter. The companies said Bronto's marketing automation platform is used by more than 1,400 customers. Founded in 2002 by CEO Joe Colopy, Bronto employs more than 220 people and also has offices in London, England, and Sydney, Australia.

Earlier this month, Sage named Antoine Henry as EVP of global product marketing. You may not have read it, even though it was posted on the corporate website, as the press release was published only in French. But the online translators I use—outside of producing the occasional odd phrase—seem to leave little doubt this is a global, not France-only job. I'd say I'm surprised the news was not translated but given how the French press office has handled X3 publicity, not really.

Aptean has retooled its best-known CRM application with Pivotal 6.5. The company says the latest edition "features a completely redesigned sales automation user experience that enables secure, mobile access from any laptop, desktop or tablet." The new Pivotal gives mobile users the ability to create emails, appoints and tasks, while also having access to calendars. Mapping functions enable users to determine a customer's location and routes there.
ABILA HIRES FIRST CFO

Nonprofit software vendor Abila has hired Jeff Cross as the company's first chief financial officer. Cross is in charge of the finance, accounting and legal departments for the Austin, Texas-based company and will primarily be responsible for revenue recognition, forecasting, and merger and acquisition activities. Cross was most recently a consultant with DigitalGlobe from September 2014 until taking the Abila job.

Hardly surprising in these days of portals, but Avalara is planning a customer portal. The information comes in a job posting for a core platform engineer for its cloud connect team by the company's channel chief Patrick Falle. "This role brings together the core products of the Avalara business, and helps provide a coherent experience to our users," Falle wrote. "You will manage the engineering process and deliver value to the customer through development of a streamlined user interface (Customer Portal) and a platform for new content that will launch Avalara in to new markets."

Aktion Associates, a software reseller based in Maumee, Ohio, has begun carrying Acumatica. The parties have not issued an announcement, but Aktion is featuring the product, which has both on-premise and cloud version, on its website. Headed by Scott Irwin, Aktion is already in the cloud with Intacct, and it says, with hosted versions of Sage's construction and real estate applications through its Cloud Services. It also offers Deltek and notes that product, along with Sage and Intacct applications, serves project-based businesses.
