MICROSOFT: NADELLA TO SERVER AND TOOLS

Satya Nadella, who was originally part of Microsoft Business Solutions, has been named as president of Microsoft’s server and tool business, a $15 billion operation. Nadella was originally slated to succeed Doug Burgum before he moved elsewhere in 2007. I said at the time it was Microsoft saying Nadella had too much talent to be left with something as small a part of the business as MBS.

The importance of the server and tool unit was summed up in the announcement that his charge includes “developing the technology road map and vision to drive adoption of the company’s products, tools and services, and delivering the company’s next generation of cloud solutions for business customers.” He was most recently in charge of engineering efforts in the Online Services Division, whose products include Bing. No offense, but I don’t see Bing as a great accomplishment. For all the puff about its precision in searching, I don’t see any more precision than in Google so why use it? Nadella is taking over from Bob Muglia, who will leave Microsoft this summer.
