SAGE EXEC PAY UP DOUBLE DIGITS

Paul WalkerThe five top executives of the Sage Group did quite well in pay for the year ended September 30 as increases in compensation ranged from 27 percent to 46 percent.  In his final year as chief executive, Paul Walker received about $2.56 million, a 37.2-percent rise while Guy Berruyer, who took over that job in the current fiscal year, earned roughly $2.25 million, a 41-percent increase in his prior role as CEO of Sage France.

The three other executive directors had increases of 27 percent, 36.6 percent and 46 percent. Percentages are calculated in the change in compensation in British pounds. Sue Swenson, CEO of Sage North America, is not a member of the executive board, as was her predecessor Ron Verni, so her pay is not reported publicly. The totals do not include equity compensation, which some European companies classify as variable as opposed to the American practice of lumping all compensation together in SEC reports. No options were awarded for the year and of the five, only David Clayton received an award under the performance share plan. The totals also do not include pension contributions, recorded for all but Berruyer. Under that category, Walker earned nearly $310,000. He served as chief executive for 16 years. While Sage’s organic revenue showed no growth in 2010 - in a year with little M&A income -that was an improvement from minus 5 percent the prior year. The company also improved its EBITA margins to 25 percent, from 24 percent in 2009. In fact, it was the highest EBITA margin since the 27 percent recorded for fiscal 2006 and EBITA rose 13 percent in total pounds. With earnings per share improved by 14 percent, the company increased its dividend by 5 percent.
