LAWSON PROFITS DESPITE CONSULTING DECLINE

Lawson LogoAlthough consulting revenue fell by 23 percent and total revenue was off by 11 percent, Lawson Software posted net income of just under $6 million for the first quarter ended September 30, which contrasted with a year-earlier loss of $3.7 million. That increase came as company cut expenses by 14 percent, led by a 23 percent decline in the cost of sales and marketing.

Total revenue dropped to just under $169 million, down 6 percent from $190.9 million in last year's comparable period. Consulting revenue fell to $57.6 million in the most recently ended period, down from $80.7 million a year ago. However, that resulted from Lawson' decision to reduce its consulting staff to its channel, along with lower bookings for consulting and implementation services.  License fees rose to just under $26 million, up 23 percent from $21.1 million a year ago. Maintenance software declined by 4 percent, falling to $85.4 million from $89.1 million, while software revenue rose to $111.4 million, a 1 percent increase from $110.2 million a year earlier.
