BUSINESSBYDESIGN: CLOSER TO REAL

SAP logoIf the British had been coming at the pace at which SAP has rolled out BusinessByDesign, its SaaS offering, Paul Revere would have had a couple of years to walk from Boston to Lexington a few times. But the product, which has been something of a punch line for NetSuite CEO Zach Nelson, looks close to being much more real.

It's been on the market in limited release, but the SAP Web site shows the United States as one of the countries in which it's available. SAP is clearly making the rounds of the Business One channel to gauge those resellers' interest in the product. However, the "How to Buy" section of the BBD Web page lists only SAP contacts. That should change within a month if the reports floating around are true. The Web page has a calculator for estimating the subscription price and the SAP site also has a section called "The Showroom" that offers videos about features, quotes from happy customers and pronouncements from analysts. Like B1, BBD combines CRM and accounting functions, but goes further with supply chain, project and HR management and supplier relationship and compliance management. The two products overlap in target markets. BBD is described as being for midsize businesses or small businesses that want large-scale business application. B1 is discussed only in terms of small business. Given that most vendors are offering on-premise and SaaS as a choice, it would seem likely both products remain on the market. But it's clear where the company's priority is and that's BBD.
