HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, ME

As the Beatles said, "It was 20 years ago today ..." Literally.  It was July 29, 1991 when I began working as technology editor at Accounting Today when it was owned by a very fine trade publishing company, Lebhar Friedman. Along the way, the publication was sold to Thomson and I later moved to the former Accounting Technology within  the latter company.
And (depending on how you count things) we were moved around within Thomson in least two different divisions. The company's trade publications were spun off as SourceMedia which two years ago decided I should work at home and not for them. With a couple of months just to relax, it was on to this gig in August 2009. It's messy to list this step-by-step so I describe it as a continuous chain of employment in the same business. This job came about after three jobs folded under me in three years. In the late spring of 1991, I did an assignment for Accounting Today, but there were not jobs. Then, I got a call from Rick Telberg who said, "Bob, can you come in. We sent our technology editor to a conference and she never came back." My predecessor ran off with a man twice her age with two grown children and a three-year old. He was invariably described in company lore as a “pear-shaped accountant.” She left 100 voice mails on the telephone and a pair of shoes under her desk and a husband wondering about her whereabouts And so the legend was born.
