SAGE SEEKS TO REGAIN CPA FOOTHOLD

peachtree logoOnce upon a time, a company called State of the Art made a name for itself by enlisting CPAs to sell its accounting software package, MAS 90. That package, of course, remains on the market after it made its way into the Sage family via acquisition.  But CPAs exited the reselling business or were shown the door by Sage and the other tool in the Sage arsenal, Peachtree, lost out to the love of QuickBooks by accountants. Or rather, it lost out to the love of QB by clients, with many accountants still seeing the Intuit product as impure.
Word keeps coming through that Sage wants back into the hearts and minds of its CPAs, although I have yet to hear first-hand how the company might envision accomplishing that. My suggestion has been to forget trying to sell Sage software products to accountants and find ways that Sage can help accountants better operate and find clients. Figure that out and the sales are likely to come along, at least in greater profusion than has been the case over the last few years. Of course, there's always the advertising slogan I suggested a few years ago, "Do you want it quick or do you want it right?" This has nothing to do with whether I believe QuickBooks is or is not right; it's just one those ways of attacking the competitor without mentioning it. And fear, uncertainty and doubt is a time-honored marketing tool. Sage, of course, may not need my help as its results for 2009 included a statement that the company is doing quite well with Peachtree Quantum. And Sage has made some big improvements in its Sage Accountants Network. The very-good-looking Peachtree Twitter and Facebook pages both have pictures of the Peachtree team, giving the push the personality it was missing just over a year ago. Similarly, its YouTube channel  shows somebody is paying a lot of attention to design.
