SAP INTROS BBD FEATURE PACK

SAP logoSAP has introduced Business By Design feature pack 2.6 which the company said serves as an open platform on which “a broad ecosystem of partners can further customize the software”.  The company said 2.6 also serves as a platform on which SAP will develop new on-demand offerings “for various lines of business.” That latter might better be phrases as industry segments or verticals, I suppose.

However, the language about an open platform is in line with the message that has been delivered by the company’s co-CEOs over the last few months that SAP is going to encourage third-party development across its entire product line. Additional new feature include “enhancements to usability, support for additional mobile devices and on-demand integration of subsidiary operations into on-premise installations at headquarters.” SAP has also introduced a Visual Studio-based environment, a software development kit that is called SAP Business ByDesign studio. Referred to as a first version, the SDK is being “tested with select partners.” The system also extends mobile support to the iPad and Blackberry – it already supports the iPhone. With support for Android and Windows Phone 7 in the next release. Another hot SAP initiative is also making its way into BBD as the analytics functionally runs on in-memory computing. SAP has been touting in-memory databases heavily and I’m surprised at how fast in-memory technology is getting pushed down the chain.
