THE IPAD CHANGES RETAIL

ipad-2Right now, this applies only to the large chains, but the iPad is displacing traditional cash registers.  And given the way technology works, is there a reason to suspect it won’t do the same thing down the retail food chain?
Home Depot and Lowe’s are both implementing iPads and so is Sears which is providing the iPad and iPod Touch in its stores in a national rollout. Handhelds will be provided for customers in what are called select merchandise areas and for employees who can perform tasks such as checking inventory. I would certainly think that this would start impacting software vendors with POS systems if it starts getting into smaller chains. Macy's and Bloomingdale's are testing computer tablets and hand-held devices to be used in certain merchandise areas with 350 stores using tables to help customers research and select skin care products the that two chain’s Clinique counters to engage customers in selected merchandise areas. I didn’t see the handhelds described by brand in coverage I saw. In another technology of interest to the midmarket, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, which have been testing RFID for two years, plan to roll out RFID across the chains. In September, the parent company said that “Use of RFID to precisely track replenishment goods on-hand by size, color and style is expected to be completed by fall of 2013 in all stores.
