FIGURING OUT NETSUITE’ CAAS

NetSuite logoWhen NetSuite readied itself for SuiteWorld conference earlier this month, CEO Zach Nelson promised an announcement that would be a revolutionary technology. That turned out to be SuiteCommerce, which the company labeled as Commerce as a Service. How revolutionary depends on your perspective as one analyst reacted that it was stuff that we’d heard before.

Nelson’s keynote described the changing online technology as meaning “there are no channels” because events are moving so quickly and it is impossible to manage separate applications for each channel. Officially, SuiteCommerce provides a united platform for B2B, B2C and Machine2Machine Commerce Models. Nelson said the new product enables companies to manage any channel. I thought CFO Ron Gill gave a more succinct description at Barclays Global Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference. Gill said that companies can “put any UI you want one top of this commerce engine” in order to “deliver an Amazon-like or an Apple-like experience and make it UI independent." The elements include the following: SuiteCommerce Experience, the page serving and development framework, which offers sub-second page loading; SuiteCommerce Services that expose NetSuite's back-end commerce functionality and data as services to the SuiteCommerce Experience and any other commerce front-end application; and the NetSuite Commerce Platform provides the core native business processing capabilities that include order management, inventory management and payment processing.
