DYNAMICS REVS UP 1 PERCENT

A friend recently said he thought Microsoft might show good results for its Dynamics operations for its second quarter ended December 31. In this economy, anything that's not a decrease is good. But I'm not sure that a 1 percent year-over-year increase in Dynamics revenue announced by Microsoft yesterday was what this friend had in mind.
However, that beat the 6 percent drop in Dynamics revenue reported for the September quarter. Meanwhile, the Microsoft Business Division, whose operations include Dynamics, reported $4.75 billion in revenue for the most recently ended quarterly, down from $4.88 billion a year earlier. That largely reflects a decrease in Office revenue, Office of course representing the lion's share of the division's business. About the same time, the Sage Group issued one of its periodic interim management statements that has little value to anyone who is not a financial analyst. The prepared statement from chief executive Paul Walker said trading and regional performance were for its December quarter in line with management’s expectations at the time preliminary fiscal 2009 results were published. The only product analysis noted was Walker’s statement that “subscription revenue growth continuing to offset subdued markets for software and software-related services.” In line with expectations is one of those phrases that rouses my ire (and I have a lot of ire). I’m certainly not applying this to Sage, but a company could just as easily say, “Results were in line with expectations. We expected it to suck. It did.”
