AICPA TOP TEN TECHOLOGIES MAY BE HISTORY

The Top Ten Technologies picked by the American Institute of CPAs is normally announced in January. But this year, the selection, if it has been made, was delayed by the resignation of Mark Mayberry, the BDO Seidman partner who chaired the committee. Officially, the results are supposed to be released after April 15. But the AICPA is weighing the possibility of changing the format. The list has always had the problem that what appeals to corporate and public CPAs are not the same issues and the possibility of picks for all areas of AICPA membership is under consideration. But from a media point of view, I think it would be unwise to have more than one list. It may make sense in mirroring membership interests. But from a public relations point of view, having one Top Ten list is a lot more appealing to media that does not deal routinely with accountants. And outside of a handful of organizations, that's most of the media. I think the exposure will drop if more than one list is released.
