AICPA TOP TEN STATUS; SAME AS REPORTED

AICPA logoYou’d think I killed somebody’s puppy after the last newsletter reported that the AIPA’s Top Ten Technologies for 2009 was being delayed until after April 15 and that that a change in the format was being considered. Somehow that got translated into some comments this newsletter said it was killed. I don’t see that anywhere what I wrote.

All I said was I thought changing the format, to possibly have separate lists for different areas, would be a mistake. And after talking to Ron Box, who heads the committee, I believe my report was on target. There will be two lists, one for CPAs in public practice and one for industry and they will be published by April 30. Usually, the list has been made public by this time of year. But Box said, "The delay was caused by realizing we wanted that product to evolved, rather than just put out another list on the same lines we have put out in the past." The lists will also be accompanied by guidance about working with the issues, rather than simply listing them. The problem has been one of the PR, something AICPA has never been good at. The minute it was recognized there would be a delay, it should have been announced and explained. I don't believe the burden should fall on the committee. There should be a process for the communications machinery to pick up on this and take action. Bob’s PR Lecture for Today: Turn a negative into a positive. I think the AICPA was caught flat-footed because it did not realize how many fans this program has. I’d come back with “We realize how valuable this program is to many. And we’re addressing the concerns."
