The same day Xero announced its revamped certification program, I mentioned to Vetter the fact that both Sage and QuickBooks have had editions for markets such as manufacturing. Vetter replied there is no intention to have editions. "We want Xero to specialize in the accounting and have an open API for people that specialize in an industry," Vetter said. "We don't want to lose the simplicity." Asked if there might be certification for specialties, she replied that was "possible" and I read the response as meaning likely. Xero's online accounting software is being used by bigger companies than expected. "We are seeing business far larger than we ever intended using Xero," CEO Rod Drury said in his keynote at this week's Xerocon in San Francisco. "We think slightly larger small businesses are coming into this platform." Coupled with an answer from Amy Vetter, the company's head of accounting, there is a question to be asked about Xero's technology direction.
