NETSUITE HOPES BBD ISN’T BAD

NetSuite has one of the most interesting ways of welcoming a competitor to a market in terms of its discussion of SAP’s introduction of BusinessByDesign, a SaaS product. NetSuite welcomes SAP to the SaaS market because having a big player join should stimulate interest in Internet-based products, finance SVP Ron Gill said at the Cowen & Co. conference this week. But his company is more worried that SAP will discourage users from considering SaaS.
“Our concern is that it’s [BBD] not a very good product and that it creates some thought in the market that SaaS is not very good. It’s taken SAP about two years to get this far and Gill expressed confidence that SAP “will eventually get the product right”.  Gill also thought SAP has had good marketing for the product. He commented charitably that, “The marketing has not been bad; the product has not been very good. The marketing has been about two and a half years ahead of the product.” That’s from the you-don’t-sweat-much-for-a-fat-girl school of compliments.
