Mike Espenshade, Tax MatrixAvalara looks like it’s going to have a busy year. It started out 2013 with the announcement of its London office as part of its move into Europe. It followed this week with its purchase of UPC Matrix Master from TaxMatrix. The acquisition of database from the Harrisburg, Pa.-based company gives Avalara a big resource for serving the retail market.

Avalara says that the UPC Matrix Master library is the most extensive of its kind in the world. It provides taxability content and tax rates behind 10 million UPC codes, according to Marshal Kushniruk, Avalara's VP business development. "We have also acquired content from another provider, which will give us just under 100,000 product types," he noted. Large retailers that purchase Matrix Master via subscription. But the content is also being incorporated into Avalara's product line. Avalara says that the Tax Matrix library is the most extensive of its kind in the world. Mike Espenshade, co-founder and president of Tax Matrix, noted the Matrix Master approach differs from "the rest of the world which relies on a category and sub-category kind of system." The content is maintained by 11 researchers at the Harrisburg office. Tax Matrix continues to provide tax consulting services. "They will also become one of our preferred suppliers for outsourcing professional services," Kushniruk said.
