CONVERGENCE 2013: CLOUDLESS?
It’s been a long time since I’ve had less of a clue of what might happen at Convergence 2013, the thirteenth show. And I have attended everyone starting with show No. 3. In 2010, there was a big build up to the expected announcement about the cloud from CEO Steve Ballmer. But that turned into a slam-bam-thank-you-Steve event in which the highly anticipated statement on the cloud became a “we’re all in” hit-and-run declaration.
And we have not had anything like that since. Microsoft’s approach to the cloud for ERP still resembles the magician who proclaims “If you’ll all pay attention to my lovely assistant” while the hosted applications are called “cloud”. When you have been told you will get a specific announcement and nothing is said for three years - that's a big gap. Perhaps the most important on my agenda is a meeting with Rich Wickham, GM for Dynamics partner sales for a partner program update. There are what are labeled as ERP and CRM deep dives on the general press schedule and maybe we’ll get an explanation of the hot news in the keynote of Kirill Tatarinov who heads Microsoft Business Solutions. But there’s no Steve on the schedule and the conference wraps up with an address from Kofi Annan, the former Secretary General of the United Nations so we may learn more about world peace than Microsoft’s SaaS plans.
