MYOB BUYS NZ PAYROLL BIZ Featured

James Scollay, MYOBNew Zealand is mentioned on this site more than normal. And it's not that we have New Zealand readers in numbers, but the action there is part of the worldwide battle in small business cloud accounting software. Australia-based MYOB recently acquired Information Management Services, which is based in Hawkes Bay on the North Island, the third New Zealand payroll company acquired by the accounting software vendor in slightly more than a year.

The deal is valued at about $6.2 million to buy another payroll company in Xero's home country. Resources are going to have a lot to say about which companies succeed in the cloud market. There has been press that Xero has foregone profit to fund its expansion in the United States, and you'd have to think the recent price increase for Xero's products in its home country were aimed at propping up its weak stock price. Interesting to see if competition in New Zealand will drain energy from other geographies. MYOB said it has more payroll plans. "We are investing substantially in developing the next generation of online payroll solutions," James Scollay, GM of MYOB's SME Solutions said in a prepared statement. Scollay said MYOB estimates more than 30 percent of the New Zealand workforce is paid via MYOB software.
