Comments this year by NetSuite CEO Zach Nelson that Dynamics GP had disappeared from his company’s view as a competitor got me thinking that maybe the product is showing its age. A talk with a friend whose company uses GP produced an earful. He complained that the payroll provided for only vacation and holidays – for personal days the company had to buy Advanced Payroll, and generally, that the need to buy additional functions was pain and that Microsoft had been pumping out upgrades with little change in functionality.

The flip side of this is the apparent uptick in Dynamics NAV, which is “hot” as one Microsoft VAR put it. I also recently heard from a couple of Canadian SAP resellers that NAV is the product they come up against the most (and not Accpac). That makes an interesting comparison to the Guy Weismantel interview covered in this issue which says, “It’s [GP] chugging along gaining more customers than ever.” But the ultimate problem may be that Weismantel couldn’t point to more specific strengths for GP as he did for the other three packages. Chugging hardly seems to be the highest praise.  In fact, he noted the company’s decision to impose limits on languages it supports. (And honest, I wrote this before I knew about the interview).
