MICROSOFT PUTS BUCKS INTO RETAIL SHOW

There are fewer ways to signal how serious a company is about a market than shelling out dollars. And that surely is what Microsoft has done in sponsoring a “Super Session” at next week’s National Retail Federation show in Manhattan. I think these are what other shows call key notes, but whatever it’s called, Kirill Tatarinov, the Microsoft corporate VP who heads the Dynamics business is one of two session speakers. The other speaker is Bill Fields, chairman and CEO or APEC China Asset Management.

Since the hour-long session is entitled, “Making the Retail Business Dynamic,” we have some idea about the message. On the specialty ERP side is Activant Solutions and POS specialists Radiant Systems and Retail Pro. There are a lot of enterprise-size vendors and the mid-market space players are limited to Microsoft and Epicor Retail. Intuit is showing, but not QuickReceipts, which the company says it launched in the fall in the company of two major retailers. One Microsoft employee said that this is the biggest investment the company is making in any show this year (other than its own). Of course, a lot of the talk at the three Microsoft booths will be about all the other things Microsoft sells, like email, business intelligence, but CRM and POS applications are also being featured and I’m sure that Dynamics AX for Retail will be thoroughly discussed.
