MICROSOFT GOING MULTI-PLATFORM

Kirill Tatarinov, MicrosoftOne of the signs of change was Kirill Tatarinov standing before room full of press people and commenting, "I've never seen so many Apple laptops in one room." Then there was Craig Dewar starting his presentation at about mobility capabilities of Dynamics CRM on an iPad. That highlighted this week's keynote at the Convergence conference by Microsoft COO Kevin Turner that the company is going to support multiple platforms and devices.

When I asked a reseller if Turner was saying Microsoft was going to be platform agnostic he replied, "Yes. And couldn't you see him gritting his teeth as he said it?" Microsoft is supporting the major mobile devices, Android, Blackberry, Windows and it is going to be more deliberate in supporting browsers other than Internet Explorer. As Turner expressed it "So, we will now embrace and manage Android, iPhone, iPad, and the other third-party vendors that are out there. And we're going to continue to open up that management platform and provide that." Certainly, the direction of the market is forcing Microsoft  to take these steps. But I have to think the SAP and its vocal support of openness and its promise not to saddle users with a product stack has contributed to this. Another sign of the times was a discussion cloud strategy in which Michael Chowning talked about browsers. The company is performing validation on multiple browsers for Dynamics NAV clients.
