VAR PROGRAMS STALLING

The combination of new players in the market and the move to the cloud in the last few years produced one of the strongest recruitment efforts in the VAR market in a long time. But in the last two years, many of those programs have stalled after a flurry of activity. Two years ago, SAP had the best-run channel conference I've ever attended in Savannah, Ga., a program that was disciplined in staying on message and saying the right things for the channel.

Since then, SAP has had little to say or do in the reseller area although there have been occasional statements that SAP might have another conference. Last year, Infor courted the press (me) for a channel summit conference. This year, the sound of the Infor channel has been that of silence. Then in April came SugarCRM's SugarCon at which there seemed to be no coherent approach to the conference in New York, a conference that had no apparent new recruits in the channel in attendance. So what has happened? It is because on-premise sales are low-growth and cloud adoption lags expectations? Even NetSuite's SuiteWorld in May fell short of the kinds of VAR signings that the company hinted would be announced at the conference. NetSuite says it is recruiting as do Intacct and Acumatica. But even if they are, the pace is well below what was anticipated two years ago.
