MICROSOFT STACK VERSUS SAP NON-STACK

Statements from Microsoft and SAP this week outlined two key differences in philosophies with which these vendors approach the technology market. Microsoft's philosophy is implicit in a statement from VP Doug Kennedy that changes to support and services are designed to support the entire Microsoft stack. That information was issued this week as was a very strong plug for openness and choice as SAP discussed its results for the third quarter ended September 30.

Since executives made some strong attacks on Oracle, and didn't mention Microsoft by name, it might not be completely accurate to say that the anti-stack statements were aimed at one company. But still, there's no mistaking the difference in approach. SAP Co-CEO Bill McDermott said that  "Our years of experience tell us customers don't want to buy big proprietary stacks and they don't want to be locked into a single vendor consolidating the past." McDermott also kept up a theme of openness with the ability to "deliver on any device" and that the company is committed to innovation without disruption.
