BUSINESS GOES APPLE?

Forget for a moment the channel wars of the midmarket and cast your eyes to the world of public accounting. That came to mind after last issue’s analysis of SAP and Sybase plotting to establish a worldwide mobile platform, an open platform. Because in the run up to the annual Midwest Accounting and Financial Showcase, sponsored by the Illinois Society of CPAs, it quickly became apparent that the tax and accounting market is rushing rapidly towards mobile.

There are few better markers than the fact that on our sister site, The Progressive Accountant, the best-read story ever had been one about 2009 tax software. That was posted in June 2009. But one posted on February 23 this year, called "Financial Apps for Mobile Phones" passed that in July and is still getting hit. Consider this: In April, Thomson Reuters announced plans for an iPhone application for accessing CPE courses and the company  is developing a mobile tool to let firms access the Practice CS practice management database. Intuit, which utilizes BNA's research for its ProLine Tax Research line, will provide Phone and iPad access for that platform. CCH is working on Blackberry access to its IntelliConnect research system with Apple stuff to follow and Blackberry support is going to come on the other vendors' products. The popularity of the iPhone is putting Apple products in the hands of people who would not have considered them five years ago. I once thought that in history, Apple chairman Steve Jobs would play Nicholas Tesla to Microsoft founder Bill Gates as Thomas Edison. I think things are changing. We are in the midst of a revolution.
