Expenses took a bite out of the bottom line at nonprofit vendor Blackbaud as the company had good sales growth. Net income for the first quarter ended March 31 dropped to $2.8 million, down 62.2 percent from $7.3 million in last year's corresponding period. Revenue grew to $94.7 million, up 9.3 percent from $86.6 million a year ago.

Blackbaud's executives generally had a good year in compensation last year, except for CEO Marc Chardon after directors changed his compensation plan to base stock awards more on performance than on time. That happened after 53 percent of shares were voted against the compensation plan last year.

Tamlin Software Developers has acquired Dominion Software Consulting of Brevard, N.C. Both companies are AccountMate resellers. Based in Dallas, Tamlin, whose clients are primarily manufacturers and distributors, sells the Tamlin Manufacturing Conductor Software.

Columbus, formerly known as Columbus IT Partner, saw a 20-percent drop in EBITDA on a 10.6-percent increase in revenue for the first quarter ended March 30. The Copenhagen-based Dynamics reseller had EBITDA of about $619,000. The company blamed a revenue mix with more lower-margin items and "project challenges in the Nordic region" for the earnings fall off.

SAP BEAT BYDESIGN TARGETS

SAP topped its target for new accounts and for revenue for Business ByDesign in North America during the first quarter. That was according to Mark Milford, national VP of the SAP North America Ecosystem Group. Milford says SAP has 45 ByD partners in North America and that appears to be about enough.

Online reselling specialist Sererra has added some top talent to its management team. The Irvine, Calif.-based cloud reseller has hired Akbar Jaffer, who had been principal product manager at Oracle, and Sid Fierro, previously a sales director and account executive for Software Acquisition Partners.

In last year's list of Bob Scott's Top 100 VARs, 21 of the resellers carried cloud products. This year, 33 from the list have started carrying SaaS accounting applications. And that number is going to increase rapidly.

Exact will have both a CEO and CFO for the first time in nearly two years after a scheduled shareholder vote on the nomination of Onno Krap to hold the financial job next month. Krap was previously CFO of Crucell Holland B.V., a group company of Johnson & Johnson since July 2011, and had served as Crucell's VP of finance starting in April 2006.

Acumen Advisors, which was formed by a merger of two Deltek resellers, has split into two organizations. The separation creates two new firms that are not quite the same as Jewell & Associates of Vienna, Va., and Innovative Solutions Group, headquartered in Mooresville, N.C., that merged to form Acumen a year ago.

Just when I was beginning to wonder what has happened with the Master VAR program, Microsoft has scheduled web seminars about the topic. Three Master VARs got separate days this week to pitch their programs. The word "wonder" was used because of the three, Tribridge of Tampa, Fla., has signed one Sales Affiliate and Socius, based in Dublin, Ohio, also one since the program launched in January.
